| WIDIA offers toolholders and indexable inserts for all types
of wheel lathes being used in the country. We have developed these
tooling in close co-operation with the Machine Tool Manufactures and Railway Workshops using them after the same have been proved in actual use. Machining conditions for these tools vary with the type of service condition the wheel has been subjected to. The profile of the wheel is subjected to wear while negotiating a curve or during braking. The wear on the profile is also due to skidding,mismatched wheel etc and therefore, different conditions of the wheel call for different machining parameters. Inspite of difficult machining conditions ,WIDAX toolholders and indexable inserts have produced the best results in reducing production time and lowering tool costs. WIDAX toolholders for wheel set machining adopts by and large the robust LS-system of clamping. The insert has a built-in chipbreaker and clamped on to the tool holder by means of a lever and clamp screw. Further for the heavy duty wheel re-turning operation, the inserts are of upended design enhancing the insert strength and mounted on to an insert holder (cassette) which in turn is mounted on to the toolholder. By doing so only the inexpensive cassettes have to be replaced in case of damage to the insert pocket. The upended inserts are neutral and common for either hands of tool holders, reducing variety and inventory cost. Another feature of this design is that the inserts and cassettes are standardised whereby the same cassette-insert combination can be used on different tool holders for various applications. In this system of clamping, the insert and |
chipbreaker are directly clamped on the toolholder body with
the help of a top clamp. Tungsten Carbide shim is used to minimize the damage to the
precision insert pocket on the toolholder. For tyre top and bottom grooving
also KS system is adopted. Axle re-turning involves an intricate copying operation necessitating a copying insert and small included angle. WIDAX-350 copying insert mounted on a toolholder with shim and clamped by a screw (WIDAX-LR system) offers the solution for this. WIDAX TOOLHOLDERS AND INSERTS OFFER FOLLOWING ADVANTAGES 1. This grade has been tailor made for Railway wheel machining with state-of-the-art "gradient sintering" substrate for good toughness and WIDALON coating for improved wear resistance. 3.
